:: A Conceptual Model of Improvisation
Improvisation is:
- A process of making choices in "real time" or the present moment, with some presence of uncertainty as to the outcome.
- A continuous stream of invented responses that are made even as consequences of previous responses unfold (and largely in response to these consequences).
- Shaped by the goals and needs of individual participants and what they listen to, focus on, and how they make meaning.
- Rarely completely novel or spontaneous; instead, represents a dialogue and relationship between structure and flexibility (as well as planning and opportunity).
- Strengthened through action, through learning by doing, and through establishing a broad "repertoire" of options that are adaptable to many situations.
- Strengthened by being one's real self, by being honest.
